Just getting into some more adventurous climbing so naturally Old Rag was the next step to "yer gonna die"... While we were climbing Sunset Walls today we noticed on the map that it was marked "closed to climbing" around Sunshine Buttress. Curiosity has gotten the better of me and I was just wondering why. Looked it up on google earth and it seems like some fairly substantial climbing could go on here, yet I couldn't find any information from the interwebs. Any knowledge about this area?

I climb at Old Rag on occasion, and have climbed at the Sunset Crags, which form from the Sunshine Buttress you are talking about. From my understanding, the route closures are only a couple sections near the very summit, not the Sunset Crags area. Probably 10-15 routes are affected.

Thanks AlexandreK, we were using the Horst book as a reference and to me it had portrayed the Sunset Walls and Sunshine Buttress as two separate areas entirely. Just wanted to ensure we wouldn't be stomping on some kind of endangered fauna or something.

I tried to find that place once and gave up because of all the higher quality stuff that can be found at Reflector Oven, OMG, and Wall that Dreams are Made of.

@Jake It is a little tough to find, but the approach isn't that bad once you figure it out. And there are some very high quality routes over there (Sunset Crack is killer).

Good point Jake Jones, we were short on time and more or less just looking for a quick, albeit, adventurous climbing session. What we found was fun. The cave to Upper Sunset was awesome. We've hiked the mountain so many times, but it's so neat to find all these fun climbing places.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
