Hi people I have only one question, is this figure 8 knot  properly tied?

Here is a decent video about fig 8 knot - how to tie it, etc.

Looks basically correct.

Looks fine but that shag rug has gotta go

Something looks really funky with your knot, I do not think it is a figure 8 but I would need to see a picture rotated 90 and 180 degrees to be sure.  It would be useful if the knot was not pulled tight so we can see where the rope goes.

Perfectly acceptable for climbing---------out of bed as in the picture.

Otherwise ask your belayer.

Yes, it's correct and well-dressed.

Not sure what climber pat is or is not seeing.  It’s a proper figure 8.

But for just kickin around the house, most prefer to tie in with a bowline.

The knot looks good but I would leave a longer tail for a backup knot.

Why are you asking? Do you think it is or is not properly tied?

A backup knot is not necessary on a figure eight. The length of the tail is fine.

This is one of my all time favorite climbing instructions/tips. The figure 8 is repeated more than almost anything in climbing (and obviously the most tied knot, by far). This video makes it fast and perfectly repeatable. So great.

In the video, Ben references a second  video in which he describes two versions of the figure 8, one of which is much easier to untie after loading. Both methods are fine, but if you are just starting out you might as well learn the latter. Check that video out, too, and show it to your friends who complain about untying their knot after a fall. Thankfully, by pure chance really, my habit pattern is to tie it in the way that makes it easier to untie so I don’t have to retrain myself.

With 6-8 inches of tail you are fine with no backup knot.

P. S. I’m surprised this thread hasn’t wandered into “Yosemite finish” territory yet.  ; )

To check a fig 8 count 5 sets of pairs, so 2,4,6,8,10. Looks good, 2in tail or any finish will do.

Glad you brought it up. I love my Yosemite finish. Gets the tail out of the way, makes the knot easier to untie. Totally aware of the potential hazard. I am more likely to get struck by lightning than ring load my knot.

Hey, Greg, I do the same for same reasons.
