PSA: Thieves in the Valley

Some friends had some quickdraws stolen from the base of a climb by a pair of male climbers at Five and Dime area.   Their modus operandi appears to be get on a nearby climb, then watch for an opportunity to steal while the other parties are engaged in climbing and walk away.    So don't leave gear lying around, should be in your pack, although I wouldn't put it past this pair to take packs as well.   The description of these guys fits many a valley climber so is not very helpful.   Maybe snap a few pics or videos of the people around you, in case they turn out to be thieves.

Did they also steal your friends' fries? Were they soloing 5.9 hand cracks? We might have a lead here...

Thieving climbers are an insult to the true dirtbag ethos, and they ain’t livin’ right.

Thanks for the headsup, Chuck. Not sure I’d align with encouraging general suspicion of fellow climbers, but keeping your stuff contained and an eye out for shady, anti-social behavior seems generally apropos per ushe.

Might be good to describe the stolen gear, too, in the likely case that the culprits are idiots as well as thieves.

i pointed out that the overenthusiasm of bright eyed bushy tailed twenty year olds, and their determination to introduce juvenile delinquents to the the outdoors (aka the land of a lot o f unlocked shiny stuff..) is beginning to undermine the qualities of the great outdoors that so many hold dear to their hearts.

and people wrung their hands....

Hey Slim,

Your accusation is unlikely and IMO unfounded. Only program like that in the valley that I know of is Kauk's Sacred Rock: https://www.sacredrok.org/

Do you have a problem with that? How do we go about stripping your admin role.

Some guys last week also had a bunch of stashed gear get stolen from the base of Lost in America. Very specific things though and not the whole rack so it was definitely a climber. You have to be a pretty sleezy climber to steal from a stashed haul bag at the base of El Cap.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
