Why do people like climbing at Red Rocks?

Absolutely, what a fucking choss pile.  Everyone should just stay home.  Nothing to see here. :p

Quit living in the past, dude!

These days, it's Henry Winkler and that guy from Saved By the Bell. And that girl from Saved By the Bell.

Ah, that's a good one, and I even live in the area. I would still say that the respective quality of every style is at a higher level at Red Rocks, plus with multiple times the number of routes.

I would concede to that point, if we ignore the other areas within an hour's drive, including the best alpine big wall in the lower 48. But, you know our sandstone has one big advantage: it rained today, you know when I was able to climb?

Later the same day.

It rained sometime in June.  I think.  Know when I lost a day to the weather?  Sometime in June, maybe.  :p

[but last winter here was miserable, one of the wettest ever... and bone dry since Spring]

 * Just a thought: Red Rocks must be pretty awesome if Alex Honnold and a handful of other pros picked Las Vegas as a residence to have RR be in their backyard haha!

Hear that, front range? All good climbing is in Vegas now, you can go ahead and move there now, k thanks.

Oh yeah, plenty of undesirables here.  But on the West side of town it's becoming Boulder West.  I've been here for more than a year.  Been on the strip once for a hockey game.  Next plan to go to the strip... yup, another hockey game.  Take what you need from life, leave the rest.  Assumptions don't do much good.   I just assume all people living in the rich parts of town are selfish assholes, so I guess what comes around...

There's not much water for SLC, Phoenix, or LA either.  The entire Western US is severely water deficient for such population densities.  The entire urban West, technically, is an "environmental atrocity".  LA being the epicenter, literally stealing their water to exist.  And as it gets warmer each year and droughts longer water is going to become an even more critical issue.  For everyone out West.

So check that condescension and recognize you aint no saint, either.  ;)

Yeah, talk to the folks in the Owens Valley about that....

Funny story, I was being heavily recruited to join a software firm in LV, and they flew me out to LV and before we even landed at McCarren I knew my answer was going to be a big fat NO EFFING WAY.  It is in the middle of a desert...people weren't meant to live in the desert, at least not in the numbers that are there.

I am from Minnesota where we get a good amount of rain, and everything is green (or white) and I would seriously miss that if I moved to the desert.

I went to RR once.  It snowed.  It sucked.

I called someone else off their high horse and saddled mine all in one night. Solid work.

Funny story? Your sense of humor is odd. It's like a humble brag and gatekeeping all wrapped up in to one. Hilarious dude.

I like the hate vegas gets from the outside, makes it more interesting, while exposing biases and ignorance.

I don't see where I was bragging about anything. Not my intention.  Mea Culpa. And I have no hate for anyplace, just would find living there pretty oppressive.

Everyone has biases dude. My mom hates the cold so she lives in Phoenix. If you are used to green trees and lakes(not reservoir), LV would be a very poor choice.

I dunno anything about a high horse, or being called off anything, I'm still pretty sure what I was actually told is true by the way it struck a cord with so many of y'all.

I also don't know how my smart ass comment lead this thread to an argument over which place is more fun, and what near-by city is better, but some people will try to argue about anything.

I'm a Salt Lake City climber headed to LCC in a few minutes hoping the rain holds, but dear God... LCC and Red Rocks aren't even in the same arena. Red Rocks is world class sandstone multi-pitch and LCC is a two-star local crag with a few good cracks and a lifetime of dirty slabs. Get off the high horse.

LCC only a 2 star yokel canyon? C'mon.

Vegas is no destination for a fun week\weekend of camping and climbing like it used to be before the suburbs oozed all the way to the loop road. Now its good for people who like AirBB/sleazy hotels, cheap booze, pornography galore, weed and soft ratings.

“Local”, not “yokel”. And compared to other granite areas, really kind of meh, both from a rock quality and topologic standpoint.

Like what? I'm visiting next month and I heard you guys got "5.9" that we call 4th class here in little cottonwood.

Last 5.9 I climbed was refried brains, pretty solid for the grade.

For contrast I did peyote power before that and it felt way soft for a 9.

Post your send updates in a livestream to this thread so we know which is softer, RR or you! Pitch by pitch, anything.

Personally, I’m more concerned with the route quality than the diamond-level hardness of the locals’ junk.

Honestly, I’m usually let down by the level of reported softness of climbing areas. I has the sad when I can’t artificially inflate my climbing grade.

Degeneracy index futures are up, buy buy buy

I know people that see the juice out and about playing golf. Fuck I'm glad he doesn't climb, probably can't with that arthritis.

When are you going to name some specific routes?

When I first read this (not thoroughly:) I thought it meant same day at Red Rock and I thought: ooooo the shitstorm that follows is going to be fun!
