Just got back from Gannett Peak (Gooseneck Glacier) in the Wind Rivers. Mostly a non-technical snow climb right now but with a couple of short sections that were steep enough to warrant front-points and an ice-axe. On our way down we met a group of three coming up. They told us they'd approached from the east (Dinwoody Creek) and this was their first time up there. Their leader was a cheerful young guy dressed in the manner of a youthful Fred Beckey, with a rope that looked to be as old as Fred would be if he was still alive. He was also carrying a strange, rusty, hook-like implement, about 10" long. He said it was his ice-axe! It looks like you can buy them on eBay for about $15. Has anyone come across this guy before? We were too stunned to say anything intelligent.

I think those things are used to help grab and lift, blocks of ice. For the freezer.
