Have you climbed Black Elk in the Winds?

BG crack is pretty similar.

It’s a lot shorter but has a similar style; arm bars, no good place to lock a knee in, and hand/hand stacks won’t get you anywhere 

It’s been some years so I don’t remember much, but having good endurance is a plus.  I remember getting to the end of the #1 growing to #4BD pitch and feeling completely gassed when pulling the final bulge/roof thingy at the end of the pitch.

My experience: I didn't really climb anything in Vedauwoo that was especially similar. We tried Horn's Mother, but it felt about 15 letter grades harder than Black Elk. (If you can climb Horn's, Black Elk will be a cakewalk.) When we actually climbed Black Elk, we both onsighted everything but the fists. On that pitch, we climbed until we fell and then "in the interest of alpine efficiency" (my favorite cop out) started pulling on #4s. Even at 5.10 C1, we thought Black Elk was absolutely stellar. 

I have not come across one like that in Vedauwoo, not even close, but have more to climb there.  I have climbed maybe 30 pitches like that in sandstone, Moab Towers and Zion (only one or two in Red Rock that clean). When you encounter one this pure in size in sandstone it typically offers better friction for your feet.  I feel that pitch on Black Elk has almost gotten polished (last time I climbed it was 5 years ago).  If you can find one in Vedauwoo that would be the best to work on for sure. Through the two roofs is easy going then the #5 and #6  section which is real clean as I recall.  Nothing even close to this challenging on Featherlite Buttress around the corner.

I remember that roof went easier than it looked from below. 

For me, the style to get up BG is nearly identical to the crux bit of Black Elk. Is BG harder? Probably, I had a single #4 and no tape and I did it. I wouldn’t be able to climb that hard on one piece on BG.

Fundamentally though, I stand by my assertion that BG would be nearly the perfect route to train for the crux of Black Elk. Not including endurance or boldness or multi-pitch efficiency.
