Ondra on the Salathe

Adam Ondra almost onsighted the Salathe yesterday, he fell twice on the headwall though. I still think that’s an incredible feat, if I’m not mistaken he could still try to onsight some of the other free routes on El Cap, but they might be to hard to onsight...
He also onsighted Cosmic Debris and 2nd go climbed Book of Hate, not to mention the dawn wall. I thought this was pretty cool and worth posting about.

This is cool and all but when is he going to put up his own route or put up a free route?

Why don't  you ask him and report back?

Seriously, what's the point of this post?

Referring to the valley. Ya the dood is super strong and a badass climber but think he could cement his legacy further and gain even more respect with an FA or free ascent of something in the valley. Something revolutionary for the valley.

That's all.

The fuck you on about? Dude established 15d, has climbed essentially every hard thing in the world and established a plethora of hard routes. Not sure how much more cementing he has to do to his legacy..

He's also only 25.

Ondra is the greatest climber who has ever lived, bar none. He could retire tomorrow and his accomplishments wouldn't be outshadowed for generations.

As for those asking why he hasn't established his own FA's... in the Valley, that takes months of labor, if not years. The dude just wants to climb.

Not to take away from Ondra's incredible accomplishments, but didn't he essentially outshadow the previous generations accomplishments? (Again, not to take away from Sharma's equally prodigal abilities)

Regarding the fa question ... On his second short trip to the valley ever he's still repeating climbs and discovering the area. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the valley doesn't seem to have many 85° roofs with cracks to bolt ... that seems to be more Ondra's style anyway right. What would motivate him to spend that significant of a time commitment in a climbing destination halfway across the world from his home? Yosemite isn't the center of everyone's climbing universe

I don't think he climbs with the goal/mindset to "cement his legacy further" or "gain even more respect." People with that type of drive (ego stroking) aren't the people that are typically at the top of their games. I think he is climbing these routes for the challenge and because they re amazing routes. Maybe he has no desire to establish routes of this style. Maybe he just wants to climb hard on rock that is known to be quality.

A few takeaways from his interview on The Runout:

  • He hadn’t seen any video of Salathe or Freerider (including Free Solo)
  • The only beta he received was rack beta
  • According to his onsight rules this attempt rules out any future onsight attempts with any route that share pitches with the Salathe
  • He was attempting to onsight in 24 hours. After his falls (60 footers) they ended up bailing.

Pretty remarkable effort!

He wanted to show the world he was stronger than Sharma. So he did a video humilliating Sharma in some hard sport Climb.

Lol, this is spot on. Ondra didn't even finish the route. If you're gonna fall it would probably be at the crux, amirite? "Almost"? More like he "didn't" onsight.

Ondra has a total sport climber mentality. Stick to the Olympic junk Ondra so the muggles will stay impressed.

it’s really cool to hear the tale from the man himself on ‘the runout’. it’s rad to see someone at that elite level obviously super stoked.

Mr. "master gumby", your trolling is lame. Take lessons from Mr. Tradiban.

The guy is good but this is a bit much and a little short sighted

I'm sure that some random goober on mountainreject pontificating about this is really going to light a fire under Ondra's ass.

Oh, and he's not just "super strong and a badass climber," we've got plenty of those; he is literally the best rock climber who has ever lived.

Well, yes, but is he having enough fun to satisfy Lowe's criteria?
