Resole your own shoes? (Poor man's resole)

Has anyone tried resoling their own shoes?  Where do you get rubber?  

Here's the situation:  I have a box of "over loved" shoes which I use for kids (scouts) I take climbing.  Many of these shoes are worn out but kinda serviceable for newbie, and would benefit from new rubber (anything better than what they have).  These are poor-man's loaners, so I don't want to spend a bunch of $ on a REAL resole and the shoes aren't worth an investment, but don't mind trying it out on a couple "lost causes" to see if some effort and minimal money is worth it for these to-be-marginal shoes.  

Thoughts?

I know you can buy rubber from evolv as welll as 5.10 in sheets. Probably not super expensive in bulk. Anyone know pricing?

He's a pro resoler and can give you the full low down. 

Technique, best/cheapest rubber etc....I think the biggest concern would be properly grinding them and a heat gun to delaminate them etc. (or w/e is proper technique).

If you have the tools not hard.

Please share whatever you find out. I dabble in the rubber art myself from time to time, and affordable rubber is always a challenge.
