Red Rock Rendezvous Crag List - 2018

Original Post

Registration is now open for Red Rock Rendezvous, which will be held March 16 - 19, 2018. Every year the information regarding crags to be used seems to get posted a little later than ideal, so in attempt to get ahead of the curve I am posting the crags which were used in 2017 right now. As new walls develop, this list will adjust slightly, however if you are looking for a general list, this is a great start to know which crags RRR participants and instructors will be at on which days. In early March, please feel free to bump this post and a more concrete list will be posted.

Friday - Sunday, 3/16 - 3/18:

Lotta Balls Wall

Jabba the Hut
Hide and Seek
Gnat Man
Dickies Cliff
Existential Wall
Moderate Mecca

Please note: RRR participants and instructors have no more (and no less) right to be at the crag than you, the general public. They have all been instructed to work alongside other climbers at the crag, and none of these crags are 'reserved.' If you want to get on a climb, please approach anyone in the group and ask who the instructor is, and then ask if you can have a turn. Basically, do what you would do any other time you want to climb something and people are already on it. The instructors will do their best to accommodate other climbers, and make sure they do not have a monopoly on the crag/climbs all day. If you feel like an instructor is being rude or unwilling to climb alongside you, please try to get their name and let Jason Martin (jason@alpineinstitute.com) or myself (andrew@alpineinstitute.com) know and we will address it. We truly want to share the crag as best as possible, but we need you to approach us and at least give us a chance to get off routes, instead of silently and angrily walking away from a crag without talking to anyone.

Any questions you have, or comments, may as well start the thread now. I'm definitely interested in constructive feedback, because there is enough time now to improve/make changes that would improve the event for both participants and general public.

I think it might be easier to post a list of areas that you won't be using. Cross referencing that list might take a while.

Definitely a weekend to get out of town.  I could do without this circus coming to town.  We have plenty of those on the Strip.

Do you guys have the list out for 2019 yet?  Trying to plan ahead.

And so it begins...the annual bashing of the RRR. Loving this already!

It's fine for people who want to come from out of town.  Not so much for locals.

Save Red Rock Canyon. Stop the Rendezvous!

Maybe they can move it to, I don't know, say, Boulder for a year or two??

Boulder has shitty climbing. I'd recommend the Gunks.

Riding Hood Wall is both on the list of use and not use. Trying to plan ahead.

Thanks for finding that, my mistake. I believe however that we will not be climbing physical graffiti and big bad wolf, the two most popular climbs on that wall, just simply using the area below those climbs for skills. I will confirm that with the organizers, but for now I’ve gone ahead and removed it from the “not in use” list.

Thanks for sharing, Andrew. I've overlapped with the RRR more than once and have never had trouble finding something to climb. I'm not a local, so I don't really get a vote, but I feel it's easy enough to coexist. I don't really have expectations of a solitude experience when stopping at RR.

No problem Zach, thanks for your positive words. I would argue that you and every U.S. Citizen gets a vote, seeing as Red Rock is National land - it is all of ours. I am a local, and perhaps I care/understand a little more about the issues Red Rock faces, but I don't deserve it any more than you do. Living in a town (Las Vegas) with an economy entirely dominated by tourism you learn to share.

Thanks for the bump Jason. If anyone is looking to get out climbing that weekend and wants help finding a spot where the Rendezvous isn't, please feel free to message me and I'll take some time to talk about your objectives and hopefully I can direct you accordingly. Keep in mind that we don't own the crags listed above, and we know we don't own those crags, so our goal is to work with you if you're definitely going to one of those walls.

Please keep this circus away from the Gunks. It's already turned into an outdoor gym.

Randy, the Aquifer is to the right (east) of Tuna and Chips wall, just past the entrance to the Oasis, up in a slot canyon.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
