Looking for Physical Therapist / Sports Massage Therapist - wrist injury

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a good physical therapist that has experience working with climbers. My wrist has been pretty sore lately, and I think I may have injured in while on a climbing trip three weeks ago. I just tried climbing outdoors this weekend in Cathedral, and it bothered me a little then. I've read about a few wrist injuries and possible causes (I think I injured it climbing on a lot of slopers...), and I'm wondering if I should get it checked out by a specialist.

I live in the Boston area, but I'd be willing to drive a bit if you think this therapist/specialist is worth it! Also I'm looking for someone who isn't crazy expensive... But all recommendations are welcome!! :)

Thank you,

Melinda

Talk to Eric Holmes at Blue Hill Sport and Spine near North Station. Highly recommend him, tell him Zach sent you. He's an experienced trad climber and sets routes at MetroRock, and he's fixed me up a number of times. I usually see him for 2-3 injuries a year. He starts appointments around 6am during the week, so it's pretty easy to get in to see him before you head to work.

Dr. Michael Melander at momentum healthcare is fantastic - not a climber himself but he's been great to work with for both climbing and non-climbing issues.  He's right on Boylston at Copley.

If PT/Massage Therapy doesn't do the trick, Dr. Cassidy at Tufts is both a hand and upper extremity specialist and chief of orthopedics.  He fixed a wrist issue for me that didn't involve surgery, but my friend who recommended him had shoulder and elbow surgery with him and had a great experience.

Hi Melinda,

I've had a persistent wrist injury that I treated myself with a brace and some time off. Most injuries of that type require time off from the activity, with perhaps some mild (focused) PT and anti-inflammatory meds.  If you're looking for a way around missing summer climbing, then I recommend that you stop using it NOW and maybe in a few weeks it will be well enough to ease back in.  I say this not knowing the particulars of your injury (which you didn't provide).  Three weeks isn't very long especially if you're continuing to use it.  Climbing is a strenuous activity on our joints, so doing any climbing when on the mend can set you back later on.  Good luck!

Thanks for all of the replies! I ended up seeing Eric Holmes (Thanks Zach for the rec) and he was great. It turns out that it's nothing serious, but a small sprain. Eric gave me a few exercises to do over the next few weeks and I'll check in with him in the next week or so.
