Red Rocks - Conditions

How are the conditions? New England climber going there for climbing trip 28th of this month.

Bonus - Cheap supermarket around vegas? Cheap food?

Canyons are snow covered. Calico might be dry by the weekend. And I scraped my windshield here yesterday morning to give you an idea of how cold it has been.

Anyone have an update on the conditions or any idea if things will be climbable by Saturday?

I have a trip planned out there to climb Saturday and Sunday; trying to figure out if I should cancel my flights.

Just make the drive to JT or NJC. Weather will be perfect and no concerns about wetness.

Canyon is seeing temps in the 20's at night and 40's during the day....so nothing is melting anytime soon.High Saturday in the park is supposed to be 48! Calico might be good and JTree and NJC are always good choices!

Went to Kraft yesterday. Things that get sun were fine, but we avoided problems that don't get much sun. Plenty of people were out bouldering.

But all the big walls are still covered in snow.

Plan on climbing at lower elevations and on south faces...

Any idea when the bigger climbs will dry? like cat in the hat, solar, olive oil, bird land. Are we talking early next week, a few weeks?

Bird Land was climbed today. Guessing Solar gets plenty of sun and is probably OK. Guessing the start of Cat in the Hat doesn't get much sun these days, but could be climbed without crampons. 1st & 2nd pullouts have plenty of sun. Kraft Mountain is low and gets plenty of sun. Brass Wall & Straight Shooter get plenty of sun...

Sunny sport walls in the Calico Hills should be good to go by this weekend. Headed out today, will update on conditions tonight.

If you want lots of fresh veggies hitting up one of the hispanic grocers in town on your way out from the airport (Mariana's comes to mind) has cheap produce and good meat. Otherwise close to Red Rock you have your choice of Smith's/Trader Joe's, Albertson's, Sprouts, or Whole foods, in ascending order of cost, depending on how you shop.

Cheap food, look for happy hour specials. At the Yard House at Red Rock Casino from 4-6 on weekdays they have happy hour, couple bucks off beers discounted appetizers. The biggest plate of chicken nachos you've seen for $6. I have had that plate of chicken nachos feed me and a buddy with leftovers after a long day of climbing. $3/person for bar food and satiation is pretty good if you ask me.

god forgive me for bringing this up but is there any concern regarding snow making the desert sandstone weaker? At least a little of it would melt every day making the rock wet right? Not trying to start shit honestly just wondering.

Seth your thoughts are on point, which is why we need to wait not only for the snow to melt, but it's related moisture to dissipate. This is made even more difficult when routes become snow free, but ledges above them continue to hold snow, melting throughout the day and continuing to saturate the rock. North facing rock will be out for a while, in general.

Today, even on sunny walls in the Calico I found little pockets of snow in places the sun didn't hit. I bet routes like Cat in the Hat will hold snow for a while on the first few pitches that don't see sun, but I haven't been back in there to check.

Plenty of climbing to be done in the sun right now though, and as long as you are flexible those that are coming to Red Rock I think will have a good time. If you are only willing to come here and climb specific routes, you may be disappointed for a while more...

Hey Andrew. This is my first trip to red rock and it's hard to get a sense for the direction a climb faces from the map so I was just throwing out longer easy read routes that had high ratings and sounded fun.

If you have any recommended routes in the 5.7 range that would likely be dry. I'd love to hear em. Looks like rr has endless 5.7. Even better if your recommendation has a lot of crack climbing. Thanks!
