Any current info or speculation about climbing and skiing Shasta via the Hotlum-Wintun the first week of April? Haven't done Shasta yet, so any good info would be appreciated. Thanks.
That's definitely one of the best lines on the mountain to ski. You drop right into a 50 degree chute right off the freakin' summit and it is a loooooong way down! But the road to the trailhead you need to access will be closed. Prolly won't open until June with a big snow year. Do trinity chutes or the west face on the south side for other equally epic lines that will be accessible. The upper part of the mountain (like 11-12k and up) can form some pretty horid rime ice though so be warned.
Thanks. How long is the steep part at the top? Any idea of how far from the TH the road is closed? We were thinking that skiing in some distance might be necessary, and considered camping because of that.
Any links to more info on the other two routes you mention? Like where they are in relation to Avalanche Gulch?
In April I would say that it is a not worth it amount of miles to get in to the north side. Stay on the south side. Check Summit Post page for all Shasta beta on routes. If you want to camp go to Hidden Valley and do the West Face or Shastina. Lots of options over there with great skiing and it's an awesome place to camp. You can be adventurous and go up Casaval or you can go the easy way up Avy Gulch to access the Trinity Chutes.
