Rope: How frayed is too frayed?

I spending the day climbing and noticed my rope has a spot of frayed sheathing. How bad does this look? Is it time to retire the rope or is this normal?

Thats fine man. What you should look for is exposed core. If the sheath is so badly frayed, or ripped, enough to show the core of the rope then you might want to retire it, or at least TR only on it. If the core is damaged at all on a rope retire it for sure. This is just normal fraying. Most of my ropes that I've used a few times have some fraying.

Yea, you're probably gonna die on that rope. I can take it for you :)

This one might be too frayed:

It looks fine. Totally fine. Assuming that there are no soft spots in the rope (indicating core damage), I would climb on that without a second thought.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
