Featured Trad, Sport, Bouldering, and other popular climbing routes and climbing areas Ferguson, Kentucky.
Just south of the confluence of Turkey creek and the Rockcastle is an east facing wall of about 150', which has potential for several trad lines. Hike south from Bolthouse road along the Rockcastle. The wall is river right, about 1/8 of a mile south after crossing Turkey creek.
Pounder Branch wall (not sure if it goes by another name locally) is about 150' tall with varied quality sandstone. At least two established routes were found here and we put up one more during our trip here. Go to the end of bolt house ridge road. Follow Lick creek north until the creek turns west (river right). Follow a wash heading up hill and north just before the river turns west.
The Rockcastle River hosts an enormous (mostly) untapped potential for new routes. The area described herein is part of the southernmost portion of the river, which is designated as a "state wild river area". The rock is very reminiscent of that found in the Red River Gorge, but of more varied quality. Being off the Rockcastle river, exploration via boat is ideal. Rapids up to class IV make this an adventure in itself. Otherwise, a network of RV trails and maintained forest trails can be utilized. Get a topo and sort it out for yourself.
