Access Issue: IMPORTANT notes on Wet Rock and Human Waste Details

WET ROCK: The sandstone in Red Rocks is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN RED ROCKS DURING OR AFTER RAIN. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery bone-dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby.

HUMAN WASTE: Human waste is a major issue plaguing the area. The Southern Nevada Climbers Coalition (SNCC) works to provide "wag bags" free of charge in several locations: Black Velvet Canyon, The Hamlet, Kraft Mountain Area, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor. These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out. Consider bringing one to be part of your daily kit no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly. Do not throw them in the toilets at the parking areas.

Description

This beginner-friendly area is located just below and to the right of the Riding Hood Wall. "Red Rock ElementarySchool" receives more sunlight than its neighboring routes due to its lower-angled formation. Climbers can practice their leading and multipitch skills on traditional, sport, and mixed routes. It is not conducive to top-rope laps, due to the length of routes and the low-angled rock. Access is via a 70 meter rappel from the top of the formation or a hike down the left side. Alternatively, on the northwest side, two rappel anchors are available when using a 60-meter rope. Making a single rappel with a 70-meter rope using the "School of Rock" anchor will leave you a few feet short, while an 80-meter rope provides ample length. A single rappel from the "Teacher's Pet" anchor is fine. A single rappel with a 60m rope is possible from the "Playground Bully" anchor. Additionally, radios are highly recommended for communication, as advised by FA'ers Lynda and Lovena.

Getting There

Get there the same as per "Physical Graffiti". Continue past the base of "Phys Graf" and head up and right on a short rock ramp and trail. At the top is a narrow slot, about 5' high. Go through this slot and you will find the top of "School of Rock". Be cautious and careful near the edge, you are 125 ft off the deck. When looking out over Calico Basin, the anchor for "Playground Bully" is on the far right, the "School of Rock" anchor is on the wall to your right. The anchor for "Teachers Pet" is in the middle, and the anchor for "Dunce Cap" is on the left. This is also the 2 rappel descent anchor. The approach time varies depending on where you park, but should be 20-30 mins.
