The seasonal closure to protect peregrine falcons is in effect for some crags on the west side of Lake Koocanusa. Closed crags include:
Dihedral Wall
Koocanusa Crags (Hidden Buttress, Great White Wall, Pit Stop, The Ruins, Upper and Lower Grandstand)
Naked Cliff
Science Lab
Sunburst Crags
Dawn Walls
Don Juan
All other westside crags are unaffected by the closure. The closure ends August 31.
Description
The Koocanusa Crags are a large grouping of crags that begin along Road 228 and extend up the hillside above the road. Crags here include: Pit Stop, Lower and Upper Grandstand, Hidden Buttress, The Ruins, Great White Wall, Dawn Wall North and South, and Don Juan Wall.
The trailhead to access all of the upper crags (all of the walls but Pit Stop and Lower Grandstand) is about 500 ft. south of Pit Stop (look for a cairn and an obvious short rock “path” into a stand of trees).
ALL of these crags are within the seasonal falcon closure area.
