Description

East facing, slightly overhung boulder with an aesthetic arete and a slanted landing.

Getting There

While approaching Prisoners boulder, turn left and head a few feet off trail at the apex of the second switchback. The climbable face of the boulder is facing east, away from the trail.

The boulder is slightly hidden behind some trailside growth. And although it is visible and practically touching the trail, it's easy too miss.

Park as for Gridley Trailhead at the end of Gridley Road. Walk 0.24 miles up Gridley Canyon Rd, staying left at the fork. Fuel Break Road trailhead will branch off the left side of the road. Follow the trail for 0.26 miles, staying left at the fork between Fuel Break Road and Prisoners Trail. The boulder will be sitting a few feet off the east side of trail, at the apex of the second switchback, 0.5 miles from the Gridley Trailhead parking.

Alternate approach is 1.2mi from Gridley Trail to Fuel Break Trail. Or, following the ridgeline west from Couch Rock for 0.2 miles until it intersects with Prisoners Trail, and then following Prisoners Trail north east for 0.2 miles and heading a few feet off trail and the apex of the first switchback you encounter from this direction.
