Description
A less trafficked area on the northside of one of Ojai's closest foothills. Home to a mixture of both quality and chossy sandstone.
Because of poor sun coverage during Nov-Mar, wet rock is a real issue on this side of the mountain. The rock can remain wet for weeks or months after the last reported rain. If the Gridley Trailhead is damp, 9 times out of 10 Prisoners will be soaked. Give the rock a generous window to dry since most of the rock on this side of the ridgeline doesn't receive a lick of sunlight from late November until the late March or April.
Getting There
Park as for Gridley Trailhead at the end of Gridley Road. Walk 0.24 miles up Gridley Canyon Rd, staying left at the fork. Fuel Break Road trailhead will branch off the left side of the road. Follow the trail for another 0.15 miles, until the trail forks between Fuel Break Road on the right and Prisoners Trail on the left. Prisoners trail will have a few switchbacks until continuing to the ridgeline. ~0.56mi
Can also be approached from the south by hiking from Shelf Ridge to Couch Rock, and following the ridgeline west until the fork with Prisoners Trail. ~1.1mi
Or by hiking from Gridley Trailhead north for 0.4 miles, then backtrack south west on Fuel Break for 0.7 miles until reaching the fork between Fuel Break and Prisoners Trail. ~1.2mi
