Description
The group ( sub-area) of boulders that are directly below the Diesel boulder. I believe this is the most extensively developed group of boulders around Whitehorse. How much more remains to be climbed is not known.
It includes the iconic Diesel boulder, of which one of the most proficient boulderers in NH states: " It’s only the single best piece of stone we have in the valley."
This re-organization orders the boulders, roughly, starting at the bottom ( "4-Cracks") and moving up to the top-most (Diesel); then putting "C", "D" and "E" sort of together in a sub-group.
Any info. on names of climbs, or names of boulders is appreciated. Please submit via COMMENT , Page Improvement, or e-mail. Thanks ! R. Hall, Admin.
Getting There
Located very roughly 300 feet east of the Silent Boulder just above the “trail” that roughly follows the blue-blazed property boundary.
GPS Locator is only approximate !
Route 1 From Cathedral Parking - Recommended - See Sketch Map - better parking. Park at Cathedral Ledge. Take the yellow-blazed Bryce Link hiking trail until you reach the Bryce Path intersection. Take the unmarked ( unblazed) path directly in front of you; this leads past the remains of Bouchard’s Cabin. [ Bryce Path (yellow blazes) is a 90-degree right, Whitehorse Ledge trail (also yellow blazes) is a slight bear left. Before the Hotel was built in the mid-1980’s the Whitehorse Trail from Cathedral parking was the standard approach to climbs on Whitehorse.]
After passing the remains of Bouchard's cabin, the path passes just to the right (north) of Bouchard's Boulder, then swings around left and up. In about 100-150 ft it passes just above Silent. From here, it roughly follows the blue-blazed boundary. In another 200-300 +/- ft it will climb 6-10 ft up a small watercourse, take this for the 10 feet then head straight up the gentle slope for 100 +/- feet to the base of the large boulder (photo) that I call "4 cracks" for it's 3 horizontal and 1 vertical crack on its East Face. ( If anybody has a more “official “ name let me know! ) If you hit a large gully watercourse, with a blue stake and tree with 3 blue blazes you have gone about 40-50 ft beyond the small watercourse.
Directions to individual boulders are given in their write-ups, starting from the base of "4-cracks"
Route 2 From Whitehorse Parking
Park in the maintenance lot at the White Mountain Hotel. Approach the Whitehorse slabs and take a right onto the yellow blazed Whitehorse Ledge Trail. Walk until you reach the intersection for the Bryce Path and take a hard left onto the unmarked trail that leads up past the remains of “Bouchard’s Cabin”. Bouchard’s Boulder will shortly appear in front of you. Follow as for route 1 from Cathedral.
It is also possible to access via the Bryce Path. As you walk up on the Bryce Path, take a left into the large talus field where the blue-blazed property boundary meets the Path. However, in a few feet you’ll meet a downed tree that will be a “ pain” with a crash pad on your back.
Route “ 2a” shortcut to Diesel Group from Whitehorse Parking - If you’re headed for the Diesel Group and coming from Whitehorse this saves a few minutes. On the Whitehorse Trail going towards Cathedral you will pass by a large downed tree on the left. (2024, photo). About 30 +/- ft beyond this, take a 90-degree left into the woods ( small cairn in woods [ 2024 ] a few feet beyond the trail) and walk straight uphill for 200-300+/- ft keeping a careful watch for the blue blazes of the “ boundary path”. You will intercept the boundary path about half way between Silent boulder and Diesel Group. Turn left ( towards Whitehorse) and reach the small water course in about 100 ft. ( If you reach the large gully watercourse with the blue stake and tree with 3-blue blazes you've gone about 40 ft too far.) Turn up the small watercourse and in 100 ft or so you reach the boulder I call " 4 Cracks". See Map
