Description
Castelvetro is a neat local crag with around 20 routes about 5 minutes off the main valtellina highway towards Tiglio, consisting of primarily 5.8-5.11 routes on a nice Schist, similar to rumney in the US. With a short approach, picnic table, and labelled routes, its a very friendly area for a short day of sport climbing. The crag is south facing and fairly high in the valley, so it dries pretty quickly after rain, but would be hot in the summer compared to climbing in the nearby valleys.
To find routes, use the large topo posted next to the picnic table to find the number of the line, and that number is posted at the base of the actual route, making it a very convenient place to visit without a guidebook.
Getting There
From SS 38, take the highway to the Teglio center. After a few km, you will pass under a large aqueduct. Begin looking on the right for a small pullout - in 2024 this was marked with signs basically saying "Private Property, Not Responsible". Take the staircase right in the parking lot and you will arrive at the crag in a short 2-3 minute walk.
