Description
This is the big daddy - probably the largest cliff on the east coast of Tasmania - a huge, overhanging face perched over the Southern Ocean. Access is committing: A rap-in, climb-out affair, often requiring directionals, wild swinging, or both just to maintain contact with the wall. Be confident that you can get back out if you pull your ropes as escape would be extremely problematic. The swell below this wall can be notoriously large, but you can also start higher if necessary to keep dry. On calm days you can start some routes from near sea level, but the lowest pitches are often coated in dried salt deposits from being constantly hammered by saturated offshore winds. Also, use care pulling ropes so as not to drop them in the drink. The rock is a low density, non-columnar dolorite: highly featured and textured and fun for climbing. Routes are 5-8 pitches in length, usually overhanging, and feature mixed protection (bolts and gear). Most require two ropes for rappelling and perhaps more to fix an escape line. South-facing and shady/windy.
