Description
Slavus dome is an amazing feature of granite that host numerous face holds and great views of the Skeena river. The access trail is not well traveled and is really actually hard to call a trail at this point. That being said in 2024 flaging was added to the upper section of trail along with some hand lines for some of the steeper sections.
Getting There
Driving from Terrace its approximately 56.1 km west on highway 16. The parking spot is past the Exchamsiks River bridge drive one or two kilometers further and park beside a large spruce tree that has been cut down (large stump left) on the north side of the highway. You will be on an old road with a yellow gate across it (lot 5841). If you walk back across the highway (Southside) you will see the Salvus Dome. The Salvus Dome is a large shoulder of light gray granite. Two prominent vegetated chimneys scale the wall for 150 to 200 meters.
After scoping out the route follow the road toward the dome. Start hiking along the road past the yellow gate and soon you will come to an opening with a large avalanche path that can be seen to the north of the opening. From here head toward the edge of the opening and follow the old growth forest west and then up for a short distance. A few orange flags have been added to the trail to assist with finding your way. Soon you will be looking down at a creek bed and water fall. Climb down the rope to the creek and cross the gulley to the west side. The flagging improves from here making its way up the slopes above with some fixed lines through a steep forest. The steep trail stays relatively close to the edge of the forest. After climbing up the slope for some way traverse west gaining very little elevation. Then climb up again below the granite wall. The estimated elevation gain to the base is approximately 200 meters and an hour and half of hiking.
