Description
South to Southwest Facing. Generally full sun by mid-morning. This area is significantly more dirty than Skyline Central or Skyline East and it is slower to dry after a rain due to water runoff from grassy benches above. The rock is generally solid and there is a mixture of bolts, pitons, and natural protection in small discontinuous cracks. Some of the routes fork along the way, and several of the routes traverse pretty significantly.
Skyline west is accessed by a grassy gully (beginning just above and left of Casino Wall). This gully ultimately rises up and to the right above casino wall, splitting West Skyline Arete from Central Skyline Arete.
The routes start at the rock "toe" slightly up and to the left in this grassy gully, and extend further to the left (west) to a large fir tree that is a good marker for the left end of the wall.
Getting There
To approach from the bottom, follow the Main Wall trail until the split off onto the West Skyline arete trail. The split to the West Skyline arete trail is just above and to the left of the 3rd class rock steps on the Main Wall approach trail. When the West Skyline trail meets the next fork, proceed up and right to fixed lines in a steep 4th (low 5th?) class gully that ascends between Hard Rock Wall and the Lower Skyline Slab. At the top of the fixed lines you will be at the Casino Wall - up and right is Skyline Central & East, Up and left is the the start of the gully to the West Skyline Arete. Ascend up the dirty gully to the start of the routes.
Climbing "A Line in Gullyverse Travels" on the Lower Skyline Slab is another way to bypass the West Skyline Arete trail fixed lines on the left to a 2 bolt anchor at the base of the approach gully to West Skyline Arete wall - from these chains one can scramble directly up to the start of the routes. With a 70 meter rope, one can also make a 35 meter rappel from these chains to avoid downclimbing the West Skyline arete trail fixed lines.
Alternatively (from above) descend to the west from the base of the Friction Slab to find the chain anchors at the top of the routes.
