About the boulders: These are a fantastic couple of high quality, roadside, southern sandstone boulders only ~35 minutes from State Street in Bristol. While not worth traveling great distances to visit, these boulders have a lot to offer for a quick afternoon session from the Tri-Cities area. V0-V8+ graded problems with good landings. The Mendota boulders are of excellent rock quality with fine grained golden orange sandstone and dark chocolate iron swirls and features. The friction is best late fall through early spring.

I recommend at least two pads and a spotter, while more pads are always awesome and probably needed for a few of these problems.

Please note: that these boulders are legitimatly roadside and people will slow down see what you're doing. Be friendly! Do not block the road and please maintain respectable and honorable behavior. If your being an idiot it will impact the relations with local landowners. Dont be the reason No Tresspassing signs get posted here.

Geography: The Clinch Mountain range spans the states of Tennessee and Virginia, lying in the ridge-and-valleysection of Appalachia. From its southern terminus at Kitts Point, which lies at the intersection of Knox, Union and Grainger counties near Blaine, Tennessee, it runs in an east-northeasterly direction to Garden Mountain near Burke's Garden, Virginia. It separates the Clinch River basin, to the north, and the Holston River basin, to the south. Clinch Mountain is long, at about 150 miles (240 km) in length. It runs generally southwest-northeast, with numerous curves. Its north-south extent is 97 miles (156 km), and east-west 172 miles (277 km). Due to its size its called a mountain range or complex. The ridge includes the sub-range of Knob Mountain, as well as four summits above 4,000 feet (Beartown Mountain, Flattop Mountain, Morris Knob, and Chimney Rock Peak).

Getting There Suggest change

From Mendota follow Pinnacle Road up as if you were going to the fire tower. After the very sharp switchback you will drive a short distance past a saddle in the road. Look to your right and you'll see the main boulder and low roof right beside the road. There is only room for about three cars neatly parked, so be courteous.
