Description

The 5th class peak just west of Airmen Peak. Called Point 5968 on the topo map, I've seen this peak referenced as The Thumb, Molino Thimble, and The Chicken Coop. Really neat summit that is 5th class on all sides and offers a great 360 degree view.

Pretty crazy that such a prominent and fun 5th class peak has seen such little action. I was the 8th person to sign the summit register since it was placed 18 years ago.

This makes for a fantastic quick scramble for those who are solid enough to do this in approach shoes and without a rope. It would definitely be a fun adventure for those wanting a rope too!

Getting There

Park at the pullout an eigth of a mile up the road from Molino Basin Campground and head up the drainage. This is the same drainage that leads to the climbing area called The Zoo/Watering Hole.

Follow the drainage up, eventually leaving it to head up the steep slope to the south side of the formation. Thankfully I found the bushwhacking on this hillside to be very light and it's a pretty pleasant (but steep) hike. You can leave the drainage before or after a pretty waterfall that is a half mile from the highway. There is no trail but you can see the formation the whole way and it would be pretty tough to get lost.

The approach takes about 45 minutes if you're in good shape and have no pack or a light pack. It's just under a mile of hiking and a 1200' ascent.
