Description
There is vast and scattered Dakota sandstone bouldering among cattle and cactus along both sides of the road on the way to Shelf Road. Rock ranges from everything: bullet to choss and butt-drag to highball. It is a Southerly warm area that is great for fall and winter. These areas have been climbed by many over the years with little documented. Two main areas exist: Oil Well Flats is a great day diversion with multiple resources worth the visit. Bob Horan mentions the “Dakota Dam” area briefly in his book on Colorado bouldering, but with my limited historical knowledge, FAs will be left unknown, and grades left just as subjective as always. With exploring, there is tons of potential for new/rediscovered lines in the many washes and ridges. As with other sandstone crags, avoid climbing after recent precipitation. Muddy conditions will cause the Oil Well Flats areas to be temporarily closed. Be aware and respectful of private property and the nearby Dinosaur Flats Shooting Range. Many hazards exist, but be cautious of rattlesnakes, ticks, cactus needles, mountain lions, choss, broken glass, 4WD terrain, and other countless perils. As always, be courteous sharing the land and practice LNT ethic.
Check out Cafe Belay in town if you need coffee or grub. This is a work in progress - contributions and corrections are encouraged!
