During this time, there are only two permitted outfitter guides for 2019. Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center and, only this year (2019), Deer Valley Ranch are permitted to climb in the area under strict guidelines and USFS monitoring.
For more information on current closures and wildlife in the area, please contact the wildlife biologist at the Salida Ranger District. Do not climb in an area if there is a nest present. No bolted routes are allowed near or through raptor nest ledges or any species nest. If you encounter a raptor nest while climbing, stop climbing and report the raptor and other nests to the appropriate land management agency.
Description
Castle Rock Gulch has beautiful granite domes in a serene landscape. There are a plethora of boulders to explore as well as fine lines put up many decades ago.
Please respect the sensitive access issues for this area as well as the no guidebook policy. Keep the adventure high and the lines short.
Getting There
From US 24 / US 285, turn on County Road 307. Drive for approximately 1.5 miles to a turn on County Road 187. Follow this 3.7 miles to a left turn on CR 188 (these turns are both signed for Castle Rock Gulch). Park about another mile near a cattleguard.
Hike up a trail following the east side of the fence that extends up from the cattleguard. From the top of the ridge, you'll begin to see some formations. From here, hike to whatever looks desirable.
