ALL SEASONAL CLIMBING CLOSURES FOR CLIMBING AND SLACKLINING WILL BE LIFTED ON FRIDAY, JULY 7TH THIS WEEK.

There are many seasonal raptor closures with varying dates and specific boundaries. These generally effect The Monument, Kiss of the Lepers, Picnic Lunch Wall and/or Smith Rock group, and possibly elsewhere. These usually run from February to the beginning of August, but each closure is usually shorter than this, and is dependent on the birds' behavior. Description
The unmistakable featured open grotto with a flat stage below. The Zoo Cave is a unique feature at Smith: super steep rock with massive holds. The quality of the routes are almost unanimously excellent.
Most routes sport cable perma-draws… but don’t trust them blindly! Two were damaged and one completely shot away in the fall of 2012 by a trigger happy passerby. Make sure the draw you about to trust your life to doesn’t have a bullet hole through it somewhere.
You might want to tape up your fingers when climbing these cave routes: the large holds are murder on the skin, though, with repeated ascents, the rock grows more friendly. Believe it or not, quite a bit of work went into manicuring the sharpness down with a wire brush during the route prep. Imagine what they felt like before buffing!
The first bolt on most cave routes was engineered to be Texas or stick clipped.
