Description
This basalt area is the nearest rock climbing to Arusha and is located on the southern slope of Mount Meru, just north of Arusha. The climbing area is located in the Themi River drainage that is protected by the Pangani water catchment program. This area also offers great nature from bird watching to primates.
Payment and Management The area is managed by the village of Olgilai. Since 2019 village has agreed to allow climbing as a way to bring development and tourism to the area. As of now payments to village are 10,000 tsh per tourist and 5,000 tsh if your a local. Also you are required to pay an elected village guide who is paid 10,000 tsh per day they will show you routes and help clear trails. Call Jackson Chairman to organise payment 0626221262. If you dont pay you jeprodise future climbing!
Location - Easiest way to locate the climbing drive to Themi Leisure Park (great place to get a drink and food after climbing). From the Leisure park walk up the road about 600 mtrs you'll past some shops and on the left look out for a field with a electric transformer on your left. Cross this field and on the right side you'll see a small path leading down into the river gorge. Some scrambling down some steeper rock then follow path toward mountain for about 300 mtrs first rock face you come to has 1 route 'rainy day'.
Walk another 50 mtrs next rock face has 2 climbs 'baboon face and baboon crack'
Walk another 400 mtrs and you'll come to the cave which has routes ' shark tooth then supa slopa'
Walk another 50 mts and you get to 'dark chocolate and black rhino'
More routes to come!
Getting There
From Themi Leisure Park, hike uphill along the main road 3-400 yards. You'll leave the road on the left and descend steeply down into the canyon. This descent involves downclimbing a 15-foot-high cliff where a fall would lead to bad consequences. Below the downclimb, a narrow, unstable path leads up-canyon just under a layer of basalt. This cliff band is roughly 200 vertical feet above the bottom of the drainage. The currently established routes are on the east side of the drainage roughly 200 yards upstream of the downclimb.
