Description

This small rock is home to short routes established with beginning (young or old) climbers in mind. Fun and safe is the name of the game here. Learning to lead can be intimidating, and these routes are meant to ease new climbers into the realm of leading. Despite their brief nature, they are fun in their own right. The rock is weathered Dakota Sandstone, which means that it is dusty and brittle in places. With ascents, it will clean up and be more user friendly. I decided to bolt routes here, because one day as I was soloing around on the crag, several kids and their mothers were hiking by, when one of the six-or-seven-year-olds said, “Mom, can I climb up the rock?” While I soloed some of these routes 35 or so years ago, this kid’s question spurred me to bolt some routes for beginners.

Getting There

From the main Sailing Hawks parking area, follow the trail directly out of the parking lot rather than passing through the metal gate (this trail is known as Junction on the map). After several switchbacks, reach an intersection with a trail sign and map (where Junction meets up with the Lower Animas Mountain Trail). Continue straight ahead (north) rather than going left (west) on a wide trail, nor taking the right turn (southeast) which leads downward and in a southeasterly direction. Follow the trail to another intersection and another sign. The rock is at this intersection (Ponderosa and Upper Spur Trails).
