Description

This small south facing out of the way crag offers a few routes and one of the finest finger cracks in Maryland. There are other boulders jumbled around the area above and below the crag; some contain large overhangs. Being a small out of the way area it’s likely going to stay a bit wild with vegetation, sticker bushes and lichen covered rock faces. However the splitter finger crack is worth the trip if you’re climbing at that level. Certainly others have stumbled on this crag before my first visit in February 2022. There was an old note in a plastic bag hanging from an old crusty carabiner jammed into the finger crack that read "Project". However the face around the finger cracks was covered in lichen and there was vegetation coming out of the crack in places making it appears as if no one had ever even worked on the route as a project. If anyone knows more of the history, message me and I’ll update this intro.

Getting There

There are two parking options below.  For hiking I recommend using a GPS or use a GPS app on your phone to find the outcrop as there is an easy ¼ mile bushwhack with NO trail leading to the outcrop. The shorter approach bypasses Ravens Rock Overlook and Sidewinder Walls.  From the Ravens rock parking lot drive Easton Ravens Rock Rd for ¼ mile then turn left, North, onto Ritchie Rd. And drive ¾mile to a small gravel pull off on the Left. The Latitude and Longitude of the pull off is 39.6713145, -77.522075. Google maps has it labeled “Ritchie Road Trailhead ”The trail is on the left and cross the rocky Devils Race Course.  Pay attention, at this point in a few hundred feet the main trail is obscured by fallen trees and it’s a narrow single track.  However another trail bends to the right and looks much more predominate. Do not follow the trail when it starts to bend to the right.  Look for a vague trail on your left that soon also turns to the left.  This trail will be blue blazed for the spring and a side trail of the AT.  Half a mile from your car you will reach the AT. Hike the AT for ¼ mile North, to your right, then bushwhack perpendicular to the AT heading East for another ¼ mile.   Approaching this way is 1 mile and 366ft elevation gain.

Alternatively you can hike the AT from the Ravens Rock parking area, on Ravens Rock Rd.  Once you reach the cross trail to the spring and shelter then continue to hike the AT for ¼ mile then bushwhack perpendicular to the AT heading East for another ¼ mile.  Approaching this way is 1-3/8 mile long and 720ftelevation gain.
