Description
Wonderful high quality sandstone short and high ball boulders surround this area. The potential for hundreds of routes from 4th Class to as hard as you want to climb exist. It is also surprising how good the landing zones are even though few people boulder here. Many of the lines have lichen on them, but it can be easily brushed off by whomever gets the first ascent, and those following will enjoy a clean climb.
Getting There
Driving west, drive through Maybell, CO, take your first right on CO Highway 318. Drive 9 miles, take a left on to Moffat County Road 10, drive 6.9 miles, and take a left at the Cross Mountain Study Area sign. From here, it is a 4X4 road...drive 1.3 miles to reach the meadow parking area. The 4X4 road requires a vehicle with clearance such as a truck or SUV, but it is flat and a mellow drive. You will be able to see the meadow at the base of the hillside...that is the meadow parking area. There are no trails. Hike up and to the right. The first boulder you will come to is the large, aesthetic Red Moon Arete Boulder...if it isn't obvious and easy to find, you didn't park in the correct place. When in doubt, climb up the slabby backside of the boulder, and look for the piton on the downhill side of the boulder...find the piton, and you found the correct boulder. The Red Moon Bouldering Area is all the boulders within 1000 feet of the Red Moon Arete Boulder.
