Description
The most promising boulder in The Gunpowder Falls Bouldering Area; The Nub Boulder itself is host to solid, dry rock (as compared to many of the other surrounding boulders that are often damp and cold as a result of the surrounding tree cover), and some really great (or that is to say, obvious) holds. Of all of the boulders here, it has the safest and most accommodating fall zone by far.
The Nub Boulder is found just up the bank of the river itself along the trail, and is the farthest boulder from the bridge (to date).
While there is only one boulder problem currently on the boulder, there seems to be plenty of space for several more difficult and more complex routes to go up (especially given the nice looking jugs and crimps found between the left hand side, and center, of the overhanging face).
Getting There
To find the boulder, go North of the Gunpowder Falls Trailhead parking area (1001 Falls Rd, Parkton, MD 21120) for about 5 minutes of walking until you reach a bridge that goes over the Gunpowder Falls river. Follow the road but watch out for traffic. Once you arrive at the Gunpowder Falls river bridge, go left off of the road just before the bridge and follow the Gunpowder S Trail North (up-stream) for approximately 5 minutes of hiking. The boulder lays just before the trail begins to shrink due to plant overgrowth on your left.
