Description

“The friendliest ghost town in Alaska”

“A town of about 100 happy people and few old s*** heads”

From boulders to big walls to alpine routes, Hyder has it all. The area is predominantly your classic granite with a smattering of quartz glacial erratics hidden all throughout the forest. The slabs and cracks will remind you of Squamish and the overhanging dry crags will remind you of Tioga Cliff. As you ascend into the alpine via dirt road for 20 miles to the Salmon Glacier (through an unpatrolled and undefined border crossing), the rock changes to bullet metamorphic with super clean and varied bouldering, crags and long routes. Most zones, aside from the Salmon Glacier, are all walking/biking distance from town. Some bouldering areas are but a stone’s throw from the road and the Hyder Chief, directly across the Salmon River, hosts an immense amount of potential for long routes less than a mile from Main Street.
