Description
The Watchtower is the small tower seen from Stunt Road as you look West towards the ridge line from the parking area. It sort of resembles a lighthouse from this vantage point. Just beyond it and out of view is the Corpse Wall. The summit of the Watchtower has long been used as an anchoring spot for slack-liners to rig a high-line that bridges the gap between the Watchtower and the south end of the Corpse Wall. The Watchtower appears to be a slender tower when viewed from the parking area, but on closer inspection, it is quite large with wide North and South faces. Unfortunately, for various reasons, both the North and South face are not suited well for rock climbing. Thus far, all of the developed climbing is found on either the West or East end of the formation where the rock is steeper and more conducive to climbing. As you approach, the formation sits below the trail off to the right with the top protruding through the dense brush. The top half of the TRD Wall faces East and is clearly visible ahead of you during the end of the approach.
Getting There
From the intersection of Stunt Road, Saddle Peak Road and Schueren Road, the trailhead for the Backbone trail begins approximately 100 yards down Stunt Road on your left. You can park up at the intersection or, if there is room, just off the road across from the trailhead. Hike up the Backbone trail to the West, passing the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District water tower on your right. Continue on the Backbone trail eventually passing a small 30’ cliff on your left (the Morpheus Boulder) until you reach a fork in the trail. Take the right fork (the left fork takes you to the top of the Corpse Wall) and as the trail begins to lead downhill, look for the Watchtower as the first large formation on your right.
