Access Issue: Red Rock RAIN AND WET ROCK: The sandstone is fragile and is very easily damaged when wet. Details

Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm, the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN RED ROCKS during or after rain. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby.

HUMAN WASTE Human waste is one of the major issues plaguing Red Rocks. The Las Vegas Climbers Liaison Council and the AAC provides free "wag bags" in several locations (Black Velvet, First Pullout, Kraft Mtn/Bouldering, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor). These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out - consider bringing one to be part of your kit (just like your rope and shoes and lunch) no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly (do not throw them in the toilets at the parking area).

Description

Chuck wall can be seen from first pullout parking. Look straight across and slightly up from the start of the path to find a huge boulder sitting prominently on the right side of the top of a cliff. Chuck wall is the dark-varnished rock directly behind this boulder facing the parking lot. It is a highly featured wall with moderate sport, mixed and trad lines. A prominent feature is a ledge system that splits the wall as it angles up and left from the right end of the cliff. The base area is a 5-10' wide vegetated notch that rises up toward the left side of the crag.

The first routes reached from the approach are down on the right end and feature fun, steep crimping. They are accessed by scrambling up some soft, chossy rock to the aforementioned ledge. Alternatively, you can walk up the ledge from the right to bypass the short choss scramble. Further up and left are easier sport routes, two mixed routes, and a straight, low-angle, gear-protected crack line. All routes have either quick-clips, pigtails or rap-ring anchors.

The wall faces southwest and gets shade in the morning and late afternoon.

Getting There

Chuck wall is located climbers left of Cactus Massacre and Meat Puppets Wall. Quick approach beta: head to Cactus Massacre and go climbers left passing Cactus Corridor and Meat Puppets wall. From the scramble access to Meat Puppets continue heading left/northwest up another 50' to reach the right end of the crag.

From first pullout parking: Walk down the path to the tourist photo rocks. Go to the right down and across the wash below the right end of Circus Wall (big arch wall just across the wash). Head climber's right (south) below Circus wall and up along a bench/terrace as it rises out of the main wash and angles slightly hiker's left (southeast). After about 150', drop down and boulder hop across a narrow, vegetated wash then scramble up the other side to a "flat" path. Follow this path slightly to the left until the next vegetated wash (150'). At this wash head left/up-wash 25' and Cactus Massacre wall will be above you to the left (North). Walk climber's left under Cactus Massacre and past Cactus Corridor (150'). Once past the corridor walk along the base of a short cliff to the next wash (150'). Look up ahead of you and you can see Chuck wall. Go right (north) up the narrow wash under an overhanging face for 40' to reach the left end of Meat Puppets wall. Scramble up to the left (northwest) to reach the right end of Chuck wall.
