Description

Climbers have been cutting their teeth at Gunnysack creek on dirty rock and incredible ice for decades. The main canyon wall starts about a mile in, where evidence of previous generations (old slings) can easily be seen from the ground. If you are looking to climb ice in Gunnysack, see Jeff Benowitz' guide "Of Buffalo, Barley and Ice". Be mindful of bigger snow slopes looming overhead as you get further back into the canyon.
The rock is generally crumbly dirt, and would take a lot of work to clean up. The slabs are where higher quality rock can be found. There are some discontinuous cracks that make for fun drytooling.

Getting There

Climbs are located 1-4miles into the canyon. Parking at Black Rapids Lodge, or mile 227 of the Richardson Highway. Please be mindful, if parking at the lodge to not disrupt or be in the way of any operations or guests. Can approach Gunnysack creek from the lodge parking via trail that dumps you onto the pipeline. Walk quarter mile south on the pipeline cut to access Gunnysack creek.
