Description
Hamburger Rock is a campground located a short ways off of Hwy 211. The dirt road to the campground continues further north to BLM land with a variety of great dispersed camping locations. Despite have beautiful formations, nearly all of the rock in this area is chossy and not suitable for climbing. However, some of the larger jugs feel pretty stable and are fun to climb, but low bouldering traverses are suggested in case anything breaks off. Avoid crimps (as enticing as they may look) because they will likely flake off.
Getting There
Note: GPS coordinates are taken from Google Maps, and Apple Maps has been known to lead to vastly different locations. This problem may have been fixed since the writing of these instructions, but it's something to be aware of.
Drive along Hwy 211 until the turnoff to Lock Hart Road (38.175499, -109.666572), at which point the road becomes a well-maintained dirt road. Some bumps and rocks, but nothing too bad. 4WD with moderate clearance is recommend, but most vehicles can drive here without a problem.
Lock Hart Road leads to Hamburger Rock campground, which has picnic tables and a bathroom nearby. The road continues quite a ways, with the campground visible to the east. Following this road leads you to the Indian Creek Group Campsite and many more dispersed camping locations.
From Hamburger Rock, you also have the option of heading east along a less-traveled road (the fork begins at 38.193544, -109.668138). This road is quite sandy, and 4WD with moderate clearance is highly recommended. There are no prominent rocks to drive over, so bottoming-out is not a concern. This road dead-ends after about 3 miles, with many places to stop in-between. A great location to stop is 38.200448, -109.658898, which has a really great camping area located in a canyon.
