Description Suggest change

An obscure and difficult-to-access corner of the park.

Most of the ice in this zone is located about 100 feet above the tracks, where there is an outcrop of the Pecatonica formation limestone. Several formations here are tall enough and steep enough to provide entertainment - you'll probably want to make a day of it and visit 3-4 ice flows.

Getting There Suggest change

From the group camp parking lot, hike or snowshoe south on the Mississippi Ridge trail (in 2022 the Park groomed the road for XC skiing, not the trail). Using a GPS receiver or dead reckoning, go past the Spook Hill gully and find a place where you can pick your way down the steep slope toward the river. Traction (crampons) help!

The taller ice formations are all in amphitheaters below the lowest rim of rock, much like the Main Flow to the south. From above you will find a shallow gully that empties over a cliff, and rappel down. There are a few places where you can scramble down as well.

Maybe the next person to visit this area will mark a few access points with survey tape?
