Description
Among the many crags that pepper the landscape of Sesimbra lay a series of limestone caves just south of the small village of Azoia. Here you'll find high-quality single-pitch (7th grade) sport routes that cut up steep caves containing tufas and stalactites, and an abundance of more moderate routes (6th grade) that flank their entrances. The rock here is sharp, but well trafficked, and the bolting is generous and confidence inspiring. Most of the routes are in the sun during the morning and shade can be found all day if you feel like tackling one of the steeper cave routes. In addition to the beautiful the landscape adds to Azoia, the proximity to the ocean allows for a quick dip to cool off during the warmer months.
As per the locals, be sure to stop by Retiro dos Amigos at the end of the day for some fresh Lambujinhas (garlic butter clams). They also sell guide books here. Cash only
Getting There
Heading west on N379 until it turns into Av. 25 de Abril. Turn left down Rua do Moinho (before you hit Azoia), the right down Rua da Baleeira. Park out front of a football field and head south down a road with an abandoned warehouse on the left. From here, meet up with the obvious climbers trail that begins just past the warehouse property.
