Description
The Zoo is a collection of crags located in the first drainage uphill from Molino Campground / Sunspots. This drainage has been explored for years, and prior to recent development the crags had a few established routes and top rope anchors. The crags now contain a nice selection of routes that skew mostly toward moderate grades. Rock quality varies from pretty darn good to typical lower mountain choss to worse than typical lower mountain choss. The crags face mostly west and north, and are shaded until about noon (one crag faces north and has all day shade). This area features a beautiful drainage, a short approach, some nice hangs at the base of the crags, and variety in the character of the climbs - crimpy slabs, steep bulges, overhanging walls, and a few cracks. Embrace the choss. Wear a helmet.
Getting There
The other crags in this area are not easily visible from the streambed. After you reach the base of The Watering Hole, follow a path uphill (left) along the base of the crag and around the corner to reach Ectotherm Tower, which faces north. From Ectotherm Tower, a path goes a few feet uphill along a short slab, and then traverses a short distance to reach The Petting Zoo and The Aviary, which are not visible until you are right upon them. All of the crags are easily reached in 15 minutes from the car.
