Description
The Stone Quarry is well known as one of the best bouldering destinations in the San Luis Valley. It's also well known for the rad mountain biking trails that have been established here.
Folks have been bouldering here since the '80s, but the vibe is still very wild and undeveloped. Another large wave of development went down in the early 2000s when local climbers systematically scoured the zone and established many of the modern classics! Many of the obvious lines have been done, but there's plenty of room for new problems.
You can climb here almost year around with the peak seasons being spring and fall. There is a lot of shade making this a good warmer weather option, but you can find full sun as well. The snow will shut down access and make climbing here really uncomfortable, so go before the snowfalls.
Getting There
The Stone Quarry can be located about 5 miles east of Del Norte on highway US 160. Drive east on US 160 from town for 5 miles, and turn right at the signs for the Stone Quarry trailhead and gun range.
There's a big parking lot just off the highway on your right that serves as a good meeting location. The road is primitive and rough, so often times carpooling from the 2WD parking lot is the best beta.
Continue up the road pass the shooting range, pass the MTB trailhead, go up the rough slabs (first rough section of road), and follow the chill two track as it bends to the west and eventually passes through a gate/fence. Take an immediate right once you go through the gate, and continue to the north along the fence line. Keep following this road through some rough sections of rocky outcroppings until it pops out near a ranch house (the highway is visible from here) and the road swings back to the west. Park near the island of boulders in the meadow or continue driving until the road ends to park closer to the Origami Boulder area.
