Description
The Gateway to the Underworld is a small archway of some of the most unique limestone in Northern Utah, with a diversity of awesome features, including some tufas. The wall faces South and gets lots of sun, so late spring (after seepage) and late fall (after wasps) are best. It is doable late or early in the day in summer.
Getting There
To approach the wall, begin the hike up Wheatgrass Canyon. Where the trail splits to continue up Wheatgrass (Serendipity Wall) or go right up Bear Hollow, cross the creek and follow the Bear Hollow trail. Continue on the Bear Hollow Trail for ~15 minutes. You will begin to pass underneath a large cliff band on the hillside to the North. Keep an eye out for an OBVIOUS grey circular area of the cliff band (this is the crag). Eventually you will cross the stream almost directly underneath the crag. Just downstream, look for a cairn next to the creek that marks the beginning of the approach trail. From the creek it’s a ~10 minute approach up to the wall. Keep an eye out for the cool fossils in the rocks.
