CLOSED: Forestry Closure Update - FULL WEST SIDE CLOSURE begins 12/11.
The west side of the park will be completely closed for forest health mitigation until further notice (~mid-2024, weather-dependent). The west trailhead parking lot will remain open for access to the south. Trails impacted by closure: Mountain Muhly Trail, Bearberry Trail, Homestead Trail, Silver Fox Trail, Ponderosa Trail, and the majority of Sisters Trail. 2023 ALD Forestry - a map of the Second Segment Closure (PDF) can be found through the link above.
The eastern side of the park and trailhead have reopened following completed forestry work in that area.
Description
Comprised of highball slab and an aggressive overhang comparable to the Pirate's Cove, The Keep is a perfect compilation of bullet rock overlooking the south Ponderosa Trail. At the time of posting (Fall 2021), all established lines have been thoroughly cleaned. There is, however, plenty of remaining choss that will clean up with time and traffic.
Getting There
As with other blocs along the Ponderosa Trail, The Keep is best approached by heading east from the second (larger) parking lot. The Keep is approximately 1 minute west and 1 minute uphill of the obvious Spire Boulder. For first timers, I recommend finding the Spire, backtracking a minute along Ponderosa until reaching a wooden bench, and then heading uphill. The GPS coordinates are approximate.
