Description
Chalk Creek Canyon is located in the valley between Mt. Princeton and Mt. Antero and spans from the Princeton hot springs up to St. Elmo. As you drive up Chalk Creek Drive, you see huge cliffs that might rival some of the climbing in Yosemite or the Black Canyon if it weren't for the fact that they are total choss. The Mt. Princeton rock is primarily a quartz monzonite that has been chemically altered by geothermal activity in the area, and this is the reason for the aforementioned chossiness; however, there are still pockets of unaltered rock in cliffs and boulders that have very high quality climbing.
Getting There
From Buena Vista, take US 285 south, and turn right after 9 miles on CO Highway 162 (turning for Princeton Hot Springs and St. Elmo). Continue past the hot springs, and see the chalk cliffs on your right. Different areas will be different distances along this road. The road turns to dirt after 10 miles.
