Description
The Octagon is an excellent, although somewhat sharp, boulder with a high concentration of problems by San Diego standards. There is the full range of grades from V0- to V hard projects. There are also few outlying boulders with great problems in this area as well. Most of the problems in this area were developed in the winter of 2006/7 by Kris Kalisuch and Eric Salazar with some of the harder lines filled in between 2015-17 by Nick Ciotti, Nathan Sharpe, and Paul Robinson.
Please note there are many morteros (grinding stones) on the surrounding slabs. Be respectful, educate yourself on the cultural significance of the area and inspect any boulder before climbing for pictographs, morteros, cupules, or any other antiquity. Also, remember to tread and pad lightly in the fragile desert environment. Pack out your trash, pick up any trash even if its not yours to help preserve the climbing resource.
Getting There
The Octagon Boulder (its 2 large boulders leaning on one another actually) lies at the top of a draw in the right angled corner of the mountain that divides Blair valley and Little Blair Valley about about ¾ of a mile from S-2 on Blair Valley Rd south/west side of the mountain. It can also be approached from Little Blair Valley Rd off S-2 to the north. See maps
