Description
Ed Bollack found this small but rather tall outcrop with a massive Big Big Roof, might even be the tallest rock outcrop in the area standing at 50 feet. However lots of loose blocks around on the face and some seriously scary rocks precariously hanging from the roof. Also lots of poison ivy around the base. This place isn't for everyone with it's hazards but if you need a new adventure and have done most of the outcrops in Thurmont Watershed and surrounding area this might be for you just keep your belayer out of the way from falling rocks. We had fun climbing and establishing some of the routes here. There are shorter rocks / boulders out to the left of the main outcrop.
Getting There
From Rt 15, Access Catoctin Hollow RD via Heading Only South bound, this is just past the main entrance of Catoctin Manor. If your heading north on 15 you can U-turn at Catoctin Manor. Take Catoctin Hollow Rd 1.3 miles to Parking on the left shoulder. This is right after crossing the small bridge, there are two spots you can pull off onto and both are a tad rough and small. Parking is at 39.582504, -77.452554.
Walk 650 feet up the road to point 39.583528, -77.454265 just prior to a boulder field on the right. Head straight up the hill for 700 feet which is gaining 150 feet in elevation. Passing a 8 foot tall boulder on its right halfway up. Then crossing the boulder field to the base of the rock. Accessing the top of the cliff on either side is steep and strenuous, and there are more sticker bushes out to the left side of the rock to deal with.
