Description
The premier climbing destination in Tunisia, with stunning views, beautiful rock, and many established climbs. Zaghouan has high quality sport, trad, and multi-pitch routes, with many areas suitable for beginner climbers and difficulties up to 8c/+ or 5.14b/c. The climbing here tends to be long and thought-provoking, with some amazing natural features (pockets, tufas, caves, etc.). There is a lifetime of rock at Zaghouan, and it's a special place to visit.
An old PDF of the guidebook is available here. A second edition is currently being written with many, many more routes and additional sectors - you may be able to track down a preliminary PDF of it if you ask around at Climb'IN in Tunis, or try contacting the local climbing association, l'Association de Spéléologie et d'Escalade de Zaghouan or ASEZ, at www.speleo-tunisie.com.
*Most* routes can be done with a 60m rope, but there are some that require an 80. As with other areas in Tunisia, there is no mountain rescue service and some of the climbing takes place in quite remote locations. There is also a military installation on the eastern summits of the mountain; while none of the climbing should take you near this, be aware not to drive too far on the road up the northeast face.
Getting There
Numerous busses and tourist services offer transportation to Zaghouan, though you may find it difficult to convince a taxi to get you to the crags. Renting a car is probably the easiest option; it is about an hour drive from Tunis to the city of Zaghouan, and another 10-30 minutes from there to the parking, depending on where you are headed. The climbing is divided between the North and South Faces, with driving and parking directions in the relevant subareas.
