Red Rock Mountain

Maine > a. Western Mountains
Warning Access Issue: Peregrine Falcons in Maine DetailsDrop down

Description

A 400’ cliff in the Caribou-Speckled Mountain Wilderness with a lower band of red patinaed yellow slabs capped by gray roofs. Some of the rock can be extremely crumbly. The cliff is in a bowl that faces pretty much due south, so it can be a warm place to climb on a cool, sunny day.

Getting There

The center of the cliff ends on the ledge views off of the Red Rock Trail. A 5-mile hike on trails will get you to the top or a mile on trails plus a 2 mile bushwhack leads directly to the base. Start from trailheads north of Stoneham Maine on the National Forest road that is the continuation of Hut Road.

[Editor’s note - You’ll probably want both the Maine Gazetteer and the AMC map of Evans Notch to find the above trailheads off Hut rd. Hut rd is reached from Stoneham rd which branches off west from Rt 5 about 3/4 mi south of the sprawling megatropolus of North Lovell ( don’t blink)  Bob Hall, Maine Admin.  ]

[Hide Comment] Do you know if this is the slab you can see from the top of Speckled Mtn?...I sort of thought THAT slab was on Butters Mtn and it’s top didn’t look very close to the top( Butters is 1 Mtn west of Red Rock on the same ridge)..or are there two slabs, one on Butters and one on Red Rock?

The more I look at the map, the more I think there must be two slabs; I would think the south ridge of Red Rock would block the view from Speckled into the south cirque of Red Rock, where the slab must be if it’s top is the summit lookout. Dec 8, 2020
