Description Suggest change

Les trappistes is a south-facing climbing area on the Grand St. Bernard road between Bovernier and Sembrancher. It consists of about a dozen 4-7 pitch climbs on Gneiss, with climbs being added regularly. Since it gets a lot of sun, this is not a great summer climbing destination, but is a fantastic choice for the fall/spring, and even on sunny winter days (since the maximum altitude is about 1000m, snow clears quickly). The rock quality is decent... there is some loose rock, but the quality along the main climbs is generally pretty good, particularly on the upper pitches. Protection is fairly good... while bolt spacing can be large, it is generally well-protected where needed.

Getting There Suggest change

Drive from Martigny on the Grand St. Bernard Road. Pass through Bovernier. About 400m after you go under a railway bridge, you will see a gravel road on your left heading into what looks like a quarry... this is the entry to Les Trappistes, but you cannot turn left, so turn around at the circle a little further up and drive back. The gravel road has a sharp hairpin to the left... follow this and drive a little further till you get to a clearing with space for 3 or 4 cars to park. There is a clearly marked path from this clearing that leads to the climbing area.
